0:00 europe is a place of pilgrimage 0:02 and we don't think of it that way but 0:05 we should 0:07 you have more tourists in europe than 0:08 you have citizens 0:10 and the question is well why is that 0:12 and the answer is very straightforward 0:14 it's beauty period the end 0:17 and 0:18 especially for someone from new york but 0:20 or from north america but from any more 0:23 modern place 0:25 coming to europe is nourishing in an 0:27 extraordinarily deep way to see these 0:30 old 0:32 communities and these beautiful 0:35 buildings 0:36 it's 0:38 necessary it's not 0:39 it's not optional that's why people 0:41 spend so much money doing it and that's 0:43 why they work to be able to do it they 0:45 work 0:46 at things they don't want to do to be 0:48 able to come and 0:49 spend a week in paris or a week in milan 0:52 or 0:53 a weekend 0:55 you have enjoyed your time here it's 0:56 beautiful that old town is so beautiful 0:59 it's crazily beautiful and 1:01 i i'm i'm 1:03 it's concerning 1:05 the more modern europe becomes the more 1:08 it looks generic 1:09 and 1:10 as an economic decision that's it's so 1:12 foolish you have this immense heritage 1:15 of stunning beauty and it's it's almost 1:18 incalculably financially worthwhile it's 1:21 like capitalize on that that's what you 1:23 have to offer the world and it's 1:25 something it's something it's not power 1:27 and dominion and oppression and 1:30 it the oppressive imperial patriarchy 1:34 that's not it at all it's 1:36 at minimum it's beauty and beauty well 1:40 that's dostoyevsky's line beauty will 1:42 save the world absolutely and my final 1:44 question is we have really made lots of 1:47 work 1:48 to make our country beautiful 1:50 town beautiful but we are afraid of 1:52 russia yeah they may come and reconquer 1:55 again and i have a question which you 1:57 may or may not answer 1:59 because you don't definitely have the 2:01 information available but as a clinical 2:03 psychologist what do you think is mr 2:05 putin crazy 2:07 no 2:09 definitely not 2:11 no no you never want to underestimate 2:15 the people that you're at war with 2:16 that's a big mistake 2:19 there 2:19 and i see no evidence at all for 2:21 clinical psychopathology on putin's side 2:24 and he's 2:28 russians are complicated and he's 2:30 complicated he is by no means the worst 2:33 leader that russia has had in the last 2:34 hundred years not by any stretch of the 2:37 imagination i'm not standing up for 2:39 putin but i'm not going to casually 2:41 demonize him 2:42 you can't 2:43 take your simplistic understanding of 2:45 adolf hitler or joseph stalin which is 2:48 incomplete and then say well that's 2:49 putin it's like look 2:52 we're in trouble here 2:54 wars tend to spread and everyone thought 2:56 when the first world war started it'd be 2:58 a few months and then when it wasn't 3:00 they thought well we'll win easily it's 3:02 like no that isn't what's going to 3:04 happen 3:04 and the people thought the same thing in 3:06 world war ii 3:07 and they thought the same thing in 3:08 afghanistan and so 3:12 this is a localized ukraine-russia 3:14 conflict well first of all no it's not 3:16 it's a war by proxy of russia against 3:19 the entire west obviously now all the 3:21 world isn't on board with that but much 3:23 of the world is but not all of it 3:25 and so 3:26 you know 3:28 you might say when your sleeve gets 3:29 caught in an industrial machine and only 3:32 an inch of your sleeve is in you think 3:34 well i've still got my whole arm it's 3:36 like yeah for the next 10 minutes 3:38 but don't be thinking that that's how 3:40 it's going to be in half an hour and 3:43 it'll be an absolute bloody miracle if 3:44 this doesn't engulf us all 3:46 and there's a high probability of that 3:49 with all of that all that that entails 3:52 what would it mean for the russians to 3:54 lose 3:55 [Music] 3:56 like let's say that's what the west 3:57 wants we want russia to lose okay what 4:00 do you mean by that lose exactly do you 4:02 want the russians to feel 4:04 that they're going to lose 4:06 they have atom bombs 4:08 what is going to happen to a country 4:10 that's already paranoid and 4:13 misguided 4:14 if they also think they're going to lose 4:17 you think they're just going to lose and 4:19 we're not going to lose along with them 4:20 that's not going to happen 4:23 and so 4:24 we're playing with fire on and i think 4:26 i'm i've written an article 4:29 uh called the civil war in the west 4:31 because i think what's happening in 4:33 russia and ukraine is 4:35 a civil war in the west it's just that's 4:38 just where it started 4:40 russia is the west 4:42 and it's not just about post-soviet 4:45 territorial expansion it's not just 4:47 about oil and gas it's definitely about 4:49 those things but it's about way more 4:51 it's about 4:52 the stunning blindness and stupidity of 4:55 europe on the energy front 4:57 who didn't know this was going to happen 5:00 who's so blind 5:01 that they believed that making europe 5:04 dependent on russian oil and gas 5:07 for environmental reasons wasn't going 5:09 to produce this 5:11 and well we didn't know well if you were 5:12 a statesman and you didn't know that you 5:14 are so incompetent that it defies 5:16 comprehension because that's so 5:17 self-evident and so now we're in that 5:19 city 5:20 about responsibility and long 5:22 perspectives 5:24 and the practical perspective too you 5:26 know it's well you have these idiot 5:28 environmental utopian ideas well what 5:30 are you willing to sacrifice to that 5:32 well how about the energy stability of 5:34 europe okay great well now here we are 5:37 so 5:41 you know we're dreaming of a planet 5:42 where there aren't people to be 5:44 a cancerous growth well enough nuclear 5:47 exchange and we might just get that 5:50 so 5:51 we're playing with fire let's keep our 5:53 fingers crossed that we can still 5:55 survive yeah well next 100 500 years 6:00 one year 6:01 even one year yeah even one year there's 6:03 going to be mass starvation in the fall 6:05 there's going to be mass migration into 6:07 europe again obviously like the writing 6:10 is on the wall the un is already 6:11 projecting 150 million people in the 6:14 fall will face what they call that food 6:17 insecurity by which they mean 6:19 skyrocketing prices and famine food 6:22 insecurity famine 6:24 so yeah it's really not good
